SAY MY NAME
Site-Specific Installation for The EpiscoDisco
Grace Cathedral - San Francisco, CA
08.22.2009
‘Say My Name’ is a lighthearted musing on the material expression of the spiritual, as well as a meditation on the diametric qualities of the physical and divine realms.
The installation seeks to echo/mirror the physical form and intention of Grace Cathedral itself – rich materials, elaborate decoration, and massive scale evoking the presence of God and the emotions of faith (while expressing the power of the church and the wealth of its benefactors) – essential qualities of gothic church architecture. Expounding on the physical form of the cathedral and corresponding church traditions of bejeweled reliquaries, golden Eucharist chalices, and the kissing of popes’ rings, a contemporary manifestation takes shape as a levitating, deity-sized bling piece. ‘Say My Name’ also seeks to explore parallels between the church’s luxuriant expressions of the spiritual & sacred and contemporary material displays of wealth, power, and import evidenced in popular culture.
The letters of the nameplate, YHWH, are the transliteration of the ancient Hebrew Tetragrammaton representing God’s name. The true pronunciation of God’s name has been lost to taboo, time, and translation, but the prevailing interpretation is that ‘YHWH‘ can be extrapolated to ‘Yahweh’, and anglicized to ‘Jehovah’ (further translated by Jay-Z to ‘H to the Izz O, V to the Izz A’ ?).

do it to it

This SATURDAY is the one, the only EPISCODISCO!
San Francisco's one and only Episco-fiesta!
7 - 10 pm.
This month features a live performance by the lovely and talented Angelina Moysov(Persephones Bees)
MEEEEGAAA Jams brought by NAKO (Popscene/Shutter)
Curatorial team Paradise Now will debut their site specific installation series inside San Francisco's Grace Cathedral with "Realm Dreams". Three screens set in inside the high hallowed walls will feature dreamy reflections from Eve Ekman, Bertie Pearson and Rebecca Whipple in slide, hand drawn animation and video narration. Floating above the pews will be the airy sculptural musings of Adam Wier and Eve Ekman. Leave your religious inhibitions at the door and join us for this dreamy night of ephemeral transcendence. Paradise Now is Jean Cooney and Eve Ekman.
Refreshments generously dispenced by the dexterous Anna Marie, Ms. Jessica and Senor Elbow. Also...The only host more Priestly than Jason: Fr. BERTIE P. Come join us for beverages, big jams and a good, old fashioned Episco-polusa. oi! oi! oi!
The July 7x7 sayith: Bertie P. has long been a fixture on the nightlife scene, MCing and DJing parties (Blow Up, Frisco Disco, Boner Party) as his out-of-this-world alter-egos. Four months ago, he became an Episcopal priest. Seriously. But it didn’t stop him from starting another party at his new office—Grace Cathedral. EpiscoDisco brings DJs, drinks and other good stuff into the famed church on the third Saturday night of the month. 1100 California St.

Eth6 is an annual collaborative publication between Artists, Social Workers and Journalists to cover stories that otherwise remain invisible in mainstream media. Eth6 couples the insight of those working in the front lines of social service with the narrative skills of journalists to create "unbroken" news. The artwork plays an integral role in balancing the heavy editorial content and providing another entry point of resonance with a general audience. Eth6 operates upon the principle that social justice cannot be realized if there is no public awareness. For this issue we have produced fifteen phenomenal stories that include researching alternatives to the criminal justice system, the community response to gang violence in San Francisco's churches, the ethical choices of caring for those who do not care for themselves on the street and many more. With over a dozen artists and photographers the issue presents thoughtful responses to these complex topics.Come celebrate the very first release of this issue with the rhythm masters official tourist and alex pasternak, ( and special guests) dance, peruse pages, enjoy!

come out!!!
We are pleased as punch to invite you to a one night only outdoor art installation in concert with the infamously rowdy Oakland Art Murmur Friday.
(A)damn and E.v.e., artistic collaborators for the past three years, will construct an ethereal sculpture that literally levitates above the dirty summer streets to remind us to cast our gaze towards the sky and realize that occasionally we are beneath the rainbow. Our airy sculpture will serve as an altar to the beauty of the present moment while casting our wishes and prayers to the wind. Please come join us from 5 to 9pm between Johansson Projects and Rock Paper Scissors above 23rd Street and Telegraph Avenue Oakland, CA.
